I would like to take this chance to let everyone know why the cruise at the end of August is important for me, MBARI, and our collaborators. I assume that John will be able to represent his own goals more articulately than I can. I had a longer version of this, but I know we are all busy so I will try to briefly outline some points which I think are relevant. * Understanding mechanisms of plankton blooms and succession requires sampling over a large portion of the Bay. * Bioluminescence is one of the few indicators which can provide an assessment of secondary production (zooplankton and heterotrophs). * This is my only ship time to support my field research between now and August 2003 (ship time requests had to be submitted more than a year and a half ago) * Outside influences should not drive MBARI's science focus, but that is not the case here. Internal research interests have been supplemented by external funds, which have made the extended night operations (and indeed 24-hour operations) possible. These could not be done by a contingent of small boats, and I intend to live up to the trust that has been given to me. * I have just returned from Santa Barbara, where I picked up the bathyphotometer for use on the AUV. It is the same instrument that was successfully deployed during MUSE, so the hardware and software should take very little engineering. * MUSE provided a valuable but limited dataset for incorporation into models. * Sea trials (collecting data at the same time) are a valuable way to evaluate AUV performance. * To have a successful collaboration in August 2003, we will need a base data set. This allows evaluation of our SPOKES sampling plan, and gives our collaborators information to develop their data-handling infrastructure. * In addition to John Ryan and myself, collaborators who will be participating in the field work this August, or who are awaiting the data, include: 1. These are just some of the reasons why I feel it is worthwhile to push for a complete operation this August. -Steve
