MP processing Notes

Prerequisites:

In order to use this software, there are several things you must have on your computer:

Matlab 5.x or higher (http://www.mathworks.com)
Matlab signal processing toolbox
the CSIRO seawater toolbox (ftp://ftp.marine.csiro.au/pub/morgan/seawater/)
the WHOI developed MMP programs (anonymous ftp to layline.whoi.edu, in pub/ellyn/MP)
data from a MMP with filenames C#######.TXT, A#######.TXT, E#######.TXT

The GUI was developed using Matlab v5.3 on a UNIX workstation, and has been tested on Matlab 6.1. It has also been tested on PCs both with 5.3 and 6.1. MACs are not supported, but the sortware might work. Please contact emontgomery@whoi.edu if you have trouble running it on your computer.

Processing overviews:

++++ Convert of ASCII to .mat files ++++

When the convert to ascii button is clicked, a window will be launched to prompt the user for:

the directory where the input files C#######.TXT A#######.TXT and E#######.TXT are stored- these files must follow this nomenclature and be either all UPPERCASE or all lowercase!!!
the directory to write the output files
the profile range to process

When the inputs are entered, click convert, which starts the conversion of the specified profiles. At this time, the separate CTD, ACM and Eng raw files are merged into one raw####.mat. The variables contained in the output raw####.mat file are described here.

++++ Create Summary ++++

When the create summary file button is clicked, a window will be launched to prompt the user for:

the directory where the input files (raw####.mat) are stored
the full path and name of the output file
the profile range to process
pressure interval over which to compute profile speed

When the inputs are entered, click make summary to start the program. The output is written to the file name specified and contains the variables described here.

++++ Derive Pressure binned data ++++

When the derive pressure gridded button is clicked, a window will be launched to prompt the user for:

the directory where the input files (raw####.mat) are stored
the directory in which to store the output (grd####.mat)
the full path of the CTD and ACM calibration files to use*
the profile range to process
the output pressure grid limits
the pressure, temperature, conductivity, and velocity bounds
the MMP, CTD and ACM id numbers
the experiment name
the mooring position and magnetic deviation at that location
the minimum number of scans that must exist in order to process a profile

* the GUI tool was not designed to perform the computations required to create the calibration files. A description of the process used is provided here

The eventual goal of the processing is to create pressure gridded .mat files for each profile. The variables stored in these files are listed here with a short description.

Using the plotting window

The plot pressure gridded data window in the main window will launch a GUI that allows the user some flexibility in what is displayed. It can create single x-y plots in the axes shown. As before, use the buttons in a top to bottom order for proper function.

The load data button brings up a chooser window to allow selection of the file to load. The first time, the whole path must be entered in the filter window. Subsequent use to select another profile in the same session will recall the previous path to the data.
Next click and drag to select from the options displayed in the Xvar and Yvar boxes. If there is no data loaded, the button will read "blank"
Then click the plot button to generate a plot of the x and y variables selected. If they are of different lengths, a message window will ask for another variable choice. There is no way to check the sizes in advance, but similar names are usually the same length (pave, tave, thetave, etc can all be plotted against each other).
If you want to add grids or reverse the axes, commands may be entered in the bottom left window. They are executed when the modify plots button is clicked.
To exit the plot generation tool, click quit.

Programs that make the GUI run:

when the convert ascii data button is clicked, a window for entry of input and output paths and the range of profiles to process is opened (cvt2mat.m). When the convert button is clicked, do_convert2.m (modified from MMP_asc2mat.m) is executed.
when the create summary button is clicked, a window for entry of input parameters is opened (summ_inp.m). When the make summary button is clicked, disp_summary.m (modified from MMP_raw_summary.m) is executed.
when the derive pressure button is clicked, a window for entry of *lots of* input parameters is opened (pgrid_new.m). When the make pressure gridded button is clicked, mag_pgrid.m (modified from MMP_pgrid.m) is executed.
when the plot raw button is clicked, a series of diagnostic plots of the raw data will be produced (raw_plots.m).
when the plot summary button is clicked, a series of plots made from the summary file will be produced (plot_raw_summary.m).
when the plot pressure gridded button is clicked, a GUI tool to select and display data from the grd####.mat files is displayed (pl_win.m).
