ABSTRACT:  Customer-applied coatings may cause a toxicity hazard.

INSTRUMENT/PROGRAM AFFECTED:  All ADCPs

DESCRIPTION:  Many of our customers are applying coatings, some of which are
antifoulants, to their ADCP equipment.  These coatings vary in their toxicity
to humans and are difficult to identify merely by their appearance.  We do not
want our employees handling unknown substances that might be potentially harm-
ful, and we do no want to take the responsibility for identifying coatings.

SOLUTION/ACTION:  We are implementing the following policy effective February
15, 1991 for equipment returned to us by our customers:

   - Customers must clean the equipment of all customer-applied coatings, or
   - Customers must provide certification that the coating on their equipment
     is nontoxic to humans.  This certification must include the name of a
     contact person who is knowledgeable about the coating, the name and manu-
     facturer of the coating, and the appropriate contact telephone numbers.

If the equipment is returned without meeting one of these two conditions, we
have instructed our employees not to touch the equipment and to leave it in
the original shipping container pending certification.  If the customer cannot
provide certification, we will return the equipment to the customer or to a
customer-specified cleaning facility.  All costs associated with customer-
applied coatings will be at the customer's expense.
