FSB-116 - BUG:INITADCP/RECOVER/WORKHORSE FIRMWARE v8.21(or later)

ABSTRACT: INITADCP and RECOVER do not work correctly in Workhorse
ADCPs with firmware version 8.21 (or later).

INSTRUMENT/PROGRAM AFFECTED:  All Workhorse systems with firmware
version 8.21 (or later); v8.21 was released 21 March 98.

DESCRIPTION: Improvements to Workhorse firmware versions 8.21 and
later have affected the performance of the INITADCP and RECOVER
programs.

Using an "old" version of INITADCP (v1.3 or earlier) will display
error messages that say the "RECORDER COULD NOT BE DETECTED" and
"CANNOT START ADCP PINGING." Although, the ADCP DOES begin
pinging, the messages could be misleading.

Using an "old" version of RECOVER (v1.2 or earlier) will NOT
recover your data from the recorder.

Neither problem is fatal. That is, your system will still collect
data even though you get the INITADCP error messages. You will
still be able to retrieve your data either through a manual dump
of all data, or by upgrading your RECOVER program.

SOLUTION/ACTION:

If you have firmware version 8.21 or later (i.e.; 8.22, 8.23,
etc.), we strongly recommend you upgrade to the latest versions
of INITADCP and RECOVER. As of this writing, the latest version
of INITADCP is v1.31, and the latest version of RECOVER is v1.21,
both having a release date of 21APR98.
