Windows NT registry configuration information INTRODUCTION ============= The NetFlex-3 NDIS 4.0 Miniport Driver is designed to provide NDIS 4.0 functionality to Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. The NDIS 4.0 version of the NetFlex-3 Driver will not work on Windows NT 3.51. Please go to the \CPQNET\WINNT351 directory for the correct drivers for Windows NT 3.51. Begin the Windows NT installation process. 2. When prompted for an Express or Custom installation, select Custom. 3. During the installation, Setup will ask if you want to automatically detect and install network adapter cards in your computer. Select "Do Not Detect". (If using the Compaq NT CD, select "Detect" and NT should install the proper drivers) 4. Select Continue to manually select and install the NetFlex-3 adapter. 5. In the Add Network Adapter box, from the drop list box, highlight Requires disk from manufacturer. Select Continue. 6. Insert the Driver Diskette into the Floppy Drive and enter: A:\CPQNET\WINNT4 (Where A: is the Floppy drive) Select OK. 7. In the Select OEM Option window, highlight "Compaq NetFlex-3 Controller" and then select OK. The driver and support programs will be copied into the appropriate directories. Important: All NetFlex-3 controllers detected in the system will be installed. 8. When the Compaq Configuration Utility for NetFlex-3 Controllers comes up, the user must highlight the Controllers that they wish to install, and then hit Install. Choose OK to exit the utility and continue. 9. Select Configure to configure any hardware options required. This step is optional; most configurations do not require any modifications. Select Help for additional help regarding the selections. Choose required selections, and then select Continue. 10. Continue with the Windows NT installation process. INSTALLING AFTER WINDOWS NT INSTALLATION 1. Start Windows NT and login to an account with administrative privileges. 2. Insert the Compaq Driver diskette into the CD-ROM drive. 3. Open the Control Panel and select the "Network" icon. 4. Select Yes to install Windows NT Networking. 5. Enter the path of the Windows NT installation files. 6. Choose "Do Not Detect" and press Continue 7. In the "Add Network Adapter" dialog box, choose "Compaq NetFlex-3" adapter 8. When the Compaq Configuration Utility for NetFlex-3 Controllers comes up, the user must highlight the Controllers that they wish to install, and then hit Install. Choose OK to exit the utility and continue. 9. Select Configure to configure any hardware options required. This is optional; most configurations do not require any modifications. NOTES ON NETFLEX-3 CONTROLLERS ================================ · The Source name for warning and error messages in the Event Log is CPQNF3. · To use a network address other than the one burned into the adapter card, enter the network address in hexadecimal form, in the following format: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX (Example: 01-02-03-4E-2D-1F). If you leave the network address blank, the network address burned into the adapter card will be used. If you do not know the network address, ask your network administrator. CONFIGURING THE NETFLEX-3 DRIVER ================================= 1. Login to an account with administrative privileges. 2. Select Main->Control Panel->Compaq Net 3. Select the adapter to be configured and then select Properties. 4. Make the appropriate changes. 5. When you are finished configuring the adapter, select OK and then select Close. 6. When prompted the restart your system, select Restart Now. MEDIA SPEED The Integrated NetFlex-3 controller comes with the 10Base-T and can be upgraded with the 100Base-TX module as you upgrade your network to 100-Mbps technology. The speed is automatically set depending upon the module you have installed. In some instances you may want to run your 100Base-TX module with a 10Base-T network. If so, change the speed by selecting the appropriate speed from the pull-down menu on this screen. In order to use the 100Base-TX module, UTP must be used, where as BNC will not support 100-Mbps technology. No upgrade module is needed on the Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX Embedded UTP Controllers. When using the AUI port on the Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX Embedded Controllers, your media speed must be set to 10Mbs. DUPLEX SETTING Compaq NetFlex-3/Netelligent Controllers can run either Full Duplex or Half Duplex. The default is Half Duplex. To enable Full Duplex operation, select the Full Duplex setting in the Compaq Net applet in Control Panel. Note: Selecting Full Duplex operation requires using the UTP (unshielded twisted pair) Media Connector and requires Network Concentrators that support full duplex. The NetFlex-3 NDIS 4.0 Miniport Driver supports Duplex Autonegotiation. If the setting is set to AUTO, the driver will determine which Duplex your Networking Hardware is set to. MEDIA CONNECTOR The media connection is auto-detected in most cases. However, for 10Base-2, use this parameter to force the use of the BNC, or AUI connector. The default is to have the hardware determine the correct connector to use. For some 10Base-T hubs which do not provide the correct link pulse, selecting the UTP setting will force the hardware to use the UTP connector. NETWORK ADDRESS To use a network address other than the one burned into the adapter card, enter the locally administrated network address in hexadecimal form, in the following format: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX (Example: 04-02-03-4E-2D-1F) If the network address is left blank, the network address burned into the adapter card will be used. If you do not know what locally administrated network address to use, ask your network administrator. This value has to be unique. REMOTE WAKE UP To enable the Remote Wake Up feature on Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX Embedded UTP Controllers, simply click on the check box in the Controller Properties section of the Compaq NET Applet. Note: This feature will only work on Compaq Embedded Netelligent Controllers containing the TLAN 3.14 and above. NETFLEX-3 ADVANCED REGISTRY PARAMETERS ====================================== The NetFlex-3 driver has several parameter values that can be modified in the Windows NT Registry Editor. Each adapter serviced by the driver has its own parameters. Each parameter has default values. Registry parameters are entered through the keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CPQNF3Instance\Parameters where Instance is the instance number of the controller parameters you wish to modify. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly may cause serious, system-wide problems, including corruption's that may make it necessary to reinstall Windows NT. Compaq cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be fixed. Use this tool at your own risk. Important: It is advised that the default values be used whenever possible. The default values are chosen to best maximize the performance of the driver. Only change parameters which are described below. Any other parameters should never be changed. Changing these parameters requires modifying the registry via REGEDIT in Windows NT 4.0. There are two types of parameters that the NetFlex-3 driver supports. The first type of parameters is optional and if not present in the registry, the default values will be assumed. The other type are used for NT configuration. These parameters are set during installation, and should never be changed. Parameter Description MaxFrameSize Specifies the largest frame size that can be handled by the driver. MaxTransmits Specifies the maximum number of transmit lists the driver allocates for transmit frames. Affects the number of packets that can be queued for transmission at any given time. MaxReceives Specifies the maximum number of receive lists the driver allocates for receive frames. MaxInternalBufs Specifies the maximum number of transmit constrain buffers the driver has to complete a transmit request to the controller which exceed the maximum number of scatter gather fragments. This number should be less than the MaxTransmits. MaxSmallBufs Specifies the maximum number of small transmit constrain buffers the driver has to complete a transmit request to the controller. The driver constrains frames which are smaller than 256 bytes to avoid the overhead involved in mapping the physical memory descriptors. MaxMulticast Specifies the maximum number of multicast addresses that can be set at one time by the driver. NetworkAddress Overrides the network address of the adapter. This parameter should only be used if you need to use a locally-administered address or there are duplicate addresses on the network. The default value for this parameter is a hexadecimal string of 12 digits. An example of a network address is: 00805F261835. IntTimer Specifies the delay value used for setting the Interrupt Pace Timer. The Interrupt Pace Timer specifies the amount of delay between back to back adapter interrupts. This value is used as the minimum value for the Interrupt Pace Timer when DyanmicTuning is enabled. MaxIntTimer Specifies the maximum delay value used for setting the Interrupt Pace Timer when DyanmicTuning is enabled. TxThreshold Specifies the value for the Transmit Threshold counter. This number reflects the number of Transmit Frames which are processed before the adapter generates a Transmit End of Frame interrupt. A value of 0 means that all Transmit End of Frame interrupts are turned off, in which case all transmit interrupts are handled while processing Transmit End of Channel or Receive End of Frame interrupts. This value is used as the minimum Transmit Threshold when DyanmicTuning is enabled. MaxTxThreshold Specifies the maximum value for the Transmit Threshold counter when DyanmicTuning is enabled. DynamicTuning Enables or disables the dynamic performance tuning algorithms. When enabled, the driver will try to maximize adapter throughput and utilization by dynamically adjusting the Interrupt Pace Timer and the Transmit Threshold settings. RemoteWakeUpEnable Enables or disables the "Remote Wake Up" feature on Embedded Netelligent Controllers. 0=Off 1=On the default = 0 The following parameters should never be changed: BusNumber Specifies the number of the bus to which the adapter is attached. For single bus systems, this parameter should always be 0. BusType Specifies the type of bus. EISA = 2, PCI = 5. MediaType Specifies the adapter is set for Ethernet. SlotNumber Specifies the slot position in which the adapter is installed. For PCI adapters, this is the union of the PCI Device and Function Number.
