To initiate this effort, we have chosen a short, low-resolution video clip (of small file size) to establish a visual index for comparisons of temporal and spatial relative abundance of reef fish. Our primary site is a six camera system that records B & W video clips (10 sec.) (< 30 frames/sec.) each hour of daylight. Each visual "collection" is given a date and time stamp to a hundredth of a second for identification of independent files. To date, we have annotated over 18, 000 clips (over five years) into an Access data-base. The labor intensive annotation includes key entering meta data as well as fish identifications, as close as possible, with a code for ID quality. Many of the files have been of very poor quality due to suspended sediments from NE winds or hurricanes, etc., transmission problems or window fouling. It would be a significant help to our annotation efforts, if we could identify really bad files without having to open each. Any capabilities beyond that would be icing on the cake! I have attached a recent note, which should appear in the MTS journal. I would be happy to send you some video clips as attachments. Should I start with simple ones and move to more complex?
