mcnutt -  a lot of investment in MOOS, many MOOS successes. Need science to try to make science successes - not too over the top nor too trivial. Need experiments w/ several scientists, that can use MOOS in its current state -- not only platform, but data system. SSDS is key to MOOS science success.

Need single proposal to make it easier to scope.

Where will MOOS end? this is a science discussion...major core development may end when first seafloor sci experiment (Shepard's Meander 2006) happens.

mars (environmental approval next June): NSF facility. How do non-NSF (MBARI-funded efforts) get included?

Main Science Interests
	mooring array (6) experiment: incl M1, M2, CIMT, vert prof.
	short-med duration, focused experiment, well contained hypothesis
	include AUVs together with moorings
	simple event response (change sample rates in response to conditions...semi-manual?)

AUV docking 2005/E, 2006/B : deploy from shore, recover with ship. Manual assisted docking, 1 week wait for event.

Event response: human in the loop

vertical profiling next year: this year reviewing existing technologies; lack telemetry, power recharge; Some work being done on NSF program UofW on telemetry, rechge (we can leverage?).
To deploy on MOOS lite/OASIS, must replace tstring. (maybe at the CIMT site, M1/M2 are too risky).

Sci priorities for SSDS:
	merged data sets (multiple platform)
	visualization
	Formal data QC
	(time series vs. spatial vs...different spaces)
	framework to allow instrument expert to write QC algorithms	
	What about metadata -- science role in defining and expressing?

New instruments for coming year:
	ESP? (lots of control, isolation from vertical profiling)
	transmissometer?

Resources to do 3 more moorings
	need instruments for all moorings + 1 complete instrument set?
	-- two more sets of sensors
	one month for array experiments
	timing: aug at earliest; leave M2 in for addtl 6 months
