The "Electrical Characteristics" section in the getting started guide I sent you is fairly accurate.  The total system power draw will of course depend on the rest of the benthic rover electronics.  We are using the MOOS Mooring Controller for SIAM, though there is a CF2 in the MOOS mooring infrastructure that I have worked on.

Alana also has quite a bit of experience with the CF2 as part of MOOS project and in working with the original benthic rover system.  I believe she has a CF1 or CF2 in her office, I'd kick the tires on that system and see what you think.

Thanks for your feedback Mike. I think I get the picture.  Power is actually a very important consideration for the Rover. It's battery powered for 6 months on the seafloor. In your experience, what kind of power does the CF2 draw ? Are you using this for SIAM project ?

I've had a pretty good experience with the CF2 so far.  The CF2 uses a Motorola 68K core and has a DOS style OS that is very similar to MS-DOS.  It's great for making simple single threaded apps that just do what they're supposed to do.  It's also extremely low power, which might not be a concern for the benthic rover.  Out of the box the CF2 does not have support for multi-threading, running multiple process, or a network stack.  It is very much like an old 8086 running MS-DOS.

If you think you need a network stack, multiple process, or other features that you usually find in a modern OS, then the CF2 might not be the best choice.  If you want a controller that is simple, robust, and low power, but slightly feature limited then it would be a good choice.  To get an idea of what the CF2 offers check out the attached getting started guide, especially specification section on.

I'm working in Building G. today if you would like to come over and talk about the CF2.  I will be going on vacation tomorrow, so I won't be around for a few days after today.
