I'd like your input on how much time and money you need for your part. Based on input from the abstract I think the task list looks like the following. Task 1) Requirement's definition and Task 2) System Architecture Development We aren't starting from scratch here. There is a fair amount of documentation to describe what we are trying to accomplish. This task should consist of everyone on the team reviewing the MARS use case scenarios, the output of the upcoming SENSORS workshop and few other documents and 2 or 3 meetings of 2-4 hours each to iterate on the requirements with me writing up the results. I'd expect another round of 3 or 4 meetings of 2-4 hours each to develop iterate between the top level system architecture and requirements refinement. 7 meetings of 4 hours each = 28 hours lets call it 5 days for everyone and a few more for me to do the typing. 3) The goal of the SIIS subproject is to develop the complete system architecture and implement the bare minimum required for the first few MARS experiements. External funding will be required to implement the detailed design of the rest of the SIIS. The secondary node fall under the catagory of waiting for external funding as it will most likely be included in the IODP bore hole external grant request. For the purposes of budgeting the SIIS work we can assume all we will be designing, building, testing and deploying is a simple SIIM. What the SIIM looks like depends on the results of tasks 1) and 2) above. However, we need to budget something so based on my current understanding of the problem (which I expect will change once we start in on this project) I'm suggesting the SIIS we budget for includes the following functionality. I) 1000 meter housing with ODI oilfilled hose/connector/penetrator on one side. A termination for an appropriate extension cable on the other II) One circuit board with a site for a) an appropriate family of DC/DC converters and I'm assuming the converter itself is an off the shelf unit like a Vicor VXXXA series, b) a site for an RS232/Ethernet converter and the converter, c) a site for a 10/100Base-T to 10/100Base-F converter and the converter, d) a site for the puck or something very similar to the puck and e) the misc stuff to support these functions. One difficult question is whether we design the converters in b) and c) or use the off the shelf stuff. I'd think we'd be doing ourselves a favor if we use COTS stuff but I'm open for comments. III) Others? 4) Test Could you fill in any additional tasks and the hours and dollars on the attached spread sheet ? As we don't know exactly what we are building yet, please budget conservatively.
