We did four dives at DEIMOS with the camera and lights. The routine was to fly into a layer, identified from shore, turn on the red lights, fly for 1/2 hour, then flip on the white lights and fly for another 1/2 hour. We did this twice at 165 meters during the day and twice at 30m at night. We spent some time in the DEIMOS cone, mostly during the 165m deep dives. BTW, 165m depth profile had a +-2m yoyo superimposed on it, so it varied from 163 to 167m. For the shallow dives we used a different mission where if we're within a certain radius, the vehicle shut off its propeller and coasts. We also tried 1 m/s (full speed) and 0.75 m/s forward speed, to see how if effects the video. We found the camera was poorly setup for the red light whereby the gain was too high and the exposure also too high. The background was saturated with red noise and the targets were over-exposed. At full speed the shutter speed was too long, resulting in radially smeared targets, especially out at the edges of the screen. This isn't surprising since we're not providing much light, nor is this color camera very sensitive. Slow speeds look pretty good, so that'll be our approach until we have enough light. Next time out we'll try a dual speed mission where the vehicle flies at its minimum controllable speed until it gets out of range, then speeds up to get back to the center. 3.
