Objectives of the dives were to observe gas and fluid seeps previously reported and mapped in the area and to sample pore water fluids for chemical analysis using the hydraulic piston corer. Weather conditions were calm; no wind or significant seas. ROV & ship operations were smooth with nothing but minor bugs to work out. The dives were successful. (Additional Chief Scientist's Comments are available via DMO). · Oily surface conditions. Port manipulator elbow shaft not secure; poor feedback. Surveyed prescribed lines. Manipulator repairs completed at day's end. Sony camera has no red from the vehicle which means no RGB or HQ digital stills. · · ptlo1699 · 1691

Dive #1493: transected 320m; collected 1 push core and 3 hydraulic cores. · Two dives (1492 & 1493) were made on the continental shelf adjacent to Gaviota Canyon in the western part of the Santa Barbara Channel. The objectives of these dives were to collect rock samples and sediment cores that could be used to determin type; origin and diagenesis of pore waters. The intent was to collect samples on either side of the offshore extension of the Santa Ynez fault to understand the role that the fault may play in the control of fluid flow distribution in this hydrocarbon-rich region.. Weather conditions were warm and very calm. No problems were encountered in the operation of the ship or ROV. An excellent job was done by all onboard. (Additional comments are available via DMO). · Crab/lobster traps at Gaviota Point dive site. Selected sites south of projected line to avoid traps. Some confusion as to the no go area. Deployed homer #17 with peeper. Second dive on subsea mounds. Serious fiddling with Winfrog - files not updating; waypoints diappearing; etc. · · ptlo1700 · 1692

First ever collection of gas samples from a rising plume throughout the water column. Took cores. Hydro cast for dissolved gas analyses. First dive with CH4 gas sensor on vehicle. · Superb day. Dove on Coil Oil Point seeps; found massive gas vents. Accomplished hydro cast. Malfunctions: Hydrate sampler has metal lanyard caught in lid and could not close. Vehicle electrical noise on CH4 gas sensor. · Cable to pl_navproc from RS20 replaced. Dead B&B 232 to 485 converter on gyro caused the data problem - replaced. Push core for the clathrate bucket pulled its mount wire from the MPC frame - recovery required to repair. Gas sampler leaking at junction of sight glass and rotary joint - recovery required to repair. Clathrate bucket would not close - recovery required for repair. Vent valve either not working properly or vent hole was plugged. Cleaned the hole and added a vent tube inside the bucket. Opened the Fiber Can to investigate lack of RGB from Sony. Found water in the can. Replaced supect "o" rings; cleaned out water. Replaced STC board - seems to have solved video problem. Removed dead fan in can; replaced dessicants. · · ptlo1703 · 1695

Exploration of toe of Goleta Slump for seeps/other features. Faunal sampling of slump toe & basin center. · Peter Brewer · Push cores; gas sampler; CTD rosette (12 10L bottles & O2 sensor); methane sensor & hydrate bucket II. · Brewer; Friederich; Peltzer & Greene (MBARI); Kvenvolden & Lorenson (USGS); Kennett (UCSB). · · Santa Barbara Dive 7: Goleta Slump Scarp N34.387º W119.986º; 100-200m. · Dives 1501 & 1502; video tapes: 3. Dive 1501 was located on the west-central part of "Eastern Outcrop" in an area where the EM300 bathymetric data shows considerable seafloor microrelief and possible rock outcrop. ... The objective of this dive was two-fold: 1) to examine the seafloor & determin the origin of the seafloor morphology; and 2) to locate gas seeps & sample same for the purpose of determining their origin & fractionation process. Weather conditions were fine and the ship & vehicle operations were excellent. This was a very successful dive. We concluded that much of the bottom relief is the result of gas & fluid expulsion. However examination of the recovered seafloor samples indicate that bedrock (perhaps Monterey shale) appears to crop out in the area as well. One seafloor rock sample recovered exhibited layers of sand & fine-grained gravels that were cemented together with asphalt. And finally we suspect because of the intricate morphology; that many of the carbonate buildups that we observed near the end of the dive probably formed in the water column; not in the sediments; from gas venting out of the sea bottom. · Supre dive. Eastern Outcrop site. Located new small gas vent and obtained sample. Hydrocast. Malfunctions: Still electrical noise on gas sensor. · STC video mux is failing. Lost channel B completely this AM. This could be heat as well. Gyro/water alarm board will be replaced tonight. Problem with the gyro were attributed to coincidence (details on request). Fiber Optic is dry. · · ptlo1705 · 1697

ACTUAL: Dive 1506 (Gaviota Canyon Outcrops) started: 1744 UTC at 34.4193ºN 120.3509ºW; 51m and ended 1844 UTC at 34.4209ºN 120.3516ºW; 52m. Dive #1507 (Secate Canyon) started 1932 UTC at 34.4258ºN 120.2752ºW; 110m and ended 2201 UTC at 34.4334ºN 120.2814ºW; 78m. · Dive #1506: transected 210m; collected 1 hydraulic core; retrieved 5 peepers. Dive #1507: transected 1.7km; collected 4 rock samples; 2 push cores and 6 hydraulic cores. · Dives 1506 & 1507 were made in the vicinity of Gaviota Canyon in the Nortwestern margin of the Santa Barbara Channel. The weather was initially windy & rough (blowing 17 kts; seas near sea state 2) and it appeared as if the dives would need to be canceled. The decision to dive and recover instruments on the seafloor was made and during this dive the weather moderated enough that the two proposed sites could be visited as planned. The vehicle worked well and all objectives were met. (Additional comments are available via DMO). · Altimeter appears repaired. Leitch displayed digitally correct on boot up this AM. By dive time the blue channel was missing. RGB from the vehicle is OK. · · ptlo1708 · 1700

Investigate Small Slump west of Gaviota Slump and a feature that appeared to be a propagating crown scarp. ACTUAL: Weather prevented this investigation and opted for an investigation of Eastern Rill to determine the origin of the feature and explore for chemosynthetic communities. · Gary Greene · · ACTUAL: Greene and Eichhubl. · · ACTUAL: Dive #1508 (Eastern Rill): started 1045 UTC at 34.3167ºN 119.8690ºW; 378m and ended 1300 UTC at 34.3130ºN 119.8512ºW; 354m. · Transected 1.8km; no samples collected. · The original location for Dive #1508 was on Small Slump west of the Gaviota Slump. The intent of the dive was to investigate teh slump and a feature that appeared in the EM300 data to be an eastward propagating crown scarp. Unfortunately after two hours of transit time to the site we encountered adverse weather that prevented us from diving. We selected an alternate site suggested by Jim Barry; which we call Eastern Rill; a small channel that drains westward along the northern base of Eastern Outcrop. The intent of diving here is to determine the origin of the feature and explore for chemosynthetc communities. After another 1 1/2 hour transit time we arrived at the site and deployed the vehicle. (Additional comments are available via DMO). · Dive location adjusted due to weather. Serial port control switch failed causing loss of tracking and video switching. Temporary repairs completed on site. · · ptlo1724 · 1701

Successfully retrieved seismonument from Clam Growth 1003m. Were unable to recover the seismometer at Northern Horseshoe Slump however as the site was apparently dredged by fishing lines. We were only able to recover the homer and cement block near the original site location. Malfunctions: Broken tubing on drill sled was leaking oil and caused Ventana to be recovered on first dive attempt. · Had some bad luck today with the loss of our seismometer sensor package at Northern Smooth Ridge.
