Data TAG

Goal: 

1. To capture and retain knowledge of current data, technologies and limitations of core information at MBARI.
2. To work with stakeholders to identify bottlenecks and limitations with current information systems and data.
3. To keep abreast of data technologies applicable to MBARI’s data.
4. To work with stakeholders to propose activity that will evaluate these existing technologies.
5. To work with stakeholders to propose work to deploy new technologies and migrate existing data to alleviate issue identified in #2.

Steps:

1. Survey past and current core data projects and data sets
	a. Benefits of each
	b. Honest assessment of what was not beneficial
2. Survey current core data sets
	a. The three V's (Volume, Variety, Velocity)
3. What are our current issues with past and projected data
4. Survey data and processing technologies to date (cloud, big data, parallel computing, GPUs)
	a. Will they apply to our issues?
	b. Develop plan for integration/application
	c. Are there holes (is this something MBARI wants to commit resources to developing)
5. Set up method/process to evaluate new data technology developments
