Things are coming along well with the SES project. We have two significant opportunities in front of us, but to cover these we would need to shift funds around, and possibly request more:

Costs:

1) We plan to deploy a triggerable McLane trap next year to test our algorithms. This plan was based on input from McLane that this would be relatively easily doable. Digging in, it looks like we'll need more eqiupment and engineering time than we'd planned. The most efficient solution is for McLane to add triggering functionality to their existing controllers. We'd need to buy a new controller and pay the NRE for their engineers to do this. Paul McGill negotiated a fair price- $19150 (assuming plus tax), which would be cheaper than the salary time needed for him and Rich to complete this objective. It also strengthens our relationship with McLane, a their understanding of remote triggering. My hope is that one day this may help us eventually export our triggering advancements with them.
     
2) We had originally proposed to bring the SES back to shore with the MARS mini node switch, and redeploy next spring. We now have the chance to stay out there. This would cost an additional $7K in MARS port fees.

Budget wiggle room:

To cover these expenses, we would like to reshuffle remaining Pelagic Benthic funds (901618). As I break down the lab, it's clear that work budgeted for in rollover POs is no longer a priority. While I understand that rollover POs are typically reallocated to other uses, I'm hoping there's flexibility in that policy given the lab's unusual circumstances this year. Releasing POs 2110286, 2010481, and 2211075 would free up $12,034. There's an additional $11K in the main project expense budget that will probably not be spent. We would have more wiggle room but the main lab expense budget has had to cover the costs of the temp RA position, which was originally budgeted to come out of salary.
