We present evidence that boreal forest fires represent a major source of soot in the stratosphere, affecting stratospheric
temperature and
chemistry and global radiative forcing. Polluted air unambiguously
attributable to forest fires in North America was observed at altitudes up
to 15.8 km, demonstrating direct transport of heavy smoke from the surface
deep into the stratosphere which is not captured by atmospheric transport
models. Stratospheric soot may not be due primarily to aircraft exhaust,
as currently believed, but may be sensitive to changes in forest burning
associated with climatic warming.
