Radiometric data were acquired by instruments on an aircraft flying over the Sea of Japan and the South China Sea during
ACE-Asia in 2001. Simultaneous measurements of net flux and aerosol optical depth from the low-altitude (near sea level)
legs are used to evaluate the radiative effects of the aerosol. When combined with aerosol-free model calculations these
measurements allow the determination of the radiative forcing at the surface. The results are compared to measurements from
over the Indian Ocean in 1999. Further model calculations incorporating different aerosol types show how the observed
aerosols compare to some known absorbers such as oceanic aerosol, mineral dust, and rural aerosol.
