AB: A physically-based infrared mineral dust property retrieval algorithm has been developed and tested with daytime AIRS radiances as inputs over ocean and land in the presence of dust to determine the surface temperature, effective dust temperature, dust effective radius and dust optical thickness at 550 nm. The aerosol optical thickness results from the physical retrieval algorithm are shown to agree with both MODIS and AERONET aerosol retrievals, and the surface temperature retrievals are shown to agree with the 11.1 um AIRS surface brightness temperatures, which were not used in the retrievals.
