AB: Spectral windows are reported for TES nadir retrievals of surface temperature, atmospheric temperature, H2O, O3, CO, and CH4. Spectral windows are selected if they increase the information content, which is a function of an a priori covariance matrix and an a posteriori covariance matrix. The a posteriori covariance depends on an estimated smoothing error, measurement error, and systematic errors from interfering species and line parameter uncertainties. In order to ensure that spectral windows are robust over a variety of climatological conditions, the information content is computed for four regions representative of northern mid-latitude, southern mid-latitude, tropical, and polar climates. Characterization of TES retrievals are a consequence of the spectral window selection; therefore, we also report the expected errors and vertical resolution for TES nadir retrievals for these four climatologically representative profiles.
