Aerosol optical depth measurements, in conjunction with novel inversion techniques, are used to determine the size
distribution of airborne particulates in the El Paso, TX-Juarez, MX region (El Paso-Juarez Airshed). The inversion method
was developed using Twomey's regularization method as a foundation. In our methodology novel algorithms are developed to
determine the constraint coefficient and the regularization matrices. The extinction coefficient of the airborne
particulates is calculated utilizing the T-matrix code. SEM images of regional airborne particulates are analyzed to
determine aerosol physical characteristics for input into the T-matrix. Subsequently, the Mesoscale Model 5 in combination
with trajectory analysis is implemented to study the transport of particulates in the El Paso-Juarez Airshed. The impact of
an urban area on the concentration of aerosols on the surrounding rural and pastoral areas is analyzed for the El Paso-Juarez
Airshed.
