Using the membrane tube technique (METT), soil air concentration profiles of $\textrm{NO}$, $\textrm{N}_{2}\textrm{O}$,
$\textrm{CO}_{2}$,
$\textrm{CH}_{4}$, and $^{222}\textrm{Rn}$ were continuously measured in a typical luvic stagnosol in a German mixed forest
of oak and birch (Juelich, Germany; $50^{\deg}54\, \textrm{N},\, 6^{\deg}24\, \textrm{E}$) during the ECHO field campaign in
July 2003 (\textbf{E}mission and
\textbf{CH}emical \textbf{T}ransformation of Biogenic Volatile \textbf{O}rganic Compounds).
In April 2002 semipermeable tubes were installed at the soil surface and in 2, 7 and 12 cm depth. $\textrm{N}_{2}\textrm{O}$,
$\textrm{CO}_{2}$,
$\textrm{CH}_{4}$, and $^{222}\textrm{Rn}$ concentrations were measured with non-destructive methods in a closed cycle system
to avoid soil air concentration changes by external gas input. Since $\textrm{NO}$ was measured with a chemiluminescence
technique ("destructive method"), the air sampled was replaced by air from a dilution system where the $\textrm{NO}$
concentration was adjusted to the concentration measured in the soil. Soil air profile measurements were accompanied by
simultaneous measurements of (a) profiles of soil moisture and soil temperature, (b) meteorological parameters, (c) soil
chamber measurements ($\textrm{NO}$, $\textrm{NO}_{2}$, $\textrm{O}_{3}$, $^{222}\textrm{Rn}$), and (d) physical and chemical
soil parameters to put soil air concentration changes into context and to infer corresponding
fluxes from the concentration profiles.
