Acurate long-term profile measurements of stratospheric water vapor are
needed to better understand possible changes that may have occurred over the
past 20 years and its effect on the ozone distribution. The SAGE II satellite
instrument has been obtaining water vapor measurements of the middle
atmosphere since its launch in 1984. Previous versions of the SAGE II water
vapor data reveal dry biases near the hygropause compared to other measurement
system that can be as large as 40 % in mid latitudes.
Comparisons with a new version of the SAGE II water vapor data set (Version
6.2) and other data sets show much better agreement over a broad range of
latitudes and over different seasons. This paper will focus on comparisons
between SAGE II and ATMOS/ATLAS-3 (Version 3), which flew on Space Shuttle
in November 1994. Results will be shown from comparisons using individual
pair coincidences and zonal averages.
