We present Polar Ozone and Aerosol Measurement (POAM) PSC and water vapor measurements obtained in the Antarctic stratosphere
from 1998-2003. The temperatures at the POAM measurement locations were not exceptionally low during the July and August
period, and the PSC statistics were not unusual. The amount of dehydration in the vortex is generally sensitive to the
coldest temperatures in the vortex, and the coldest regions in 2003 Antarctic vortex during this period were unusually cold.
POAM did observe unusually low water vapor mixing ratios, especially at the upper altitudes of the dehydration region.
Water vapor mixing ratios at 22 km fell below 2 ppmv in early August, well outside the 4-6 ppmv range observed over the
previous five years. We shall examine the interannual variation of water vapor and PSCs over the six Antarctic winters for
which POAM data is available, and see how these are correlated with interannual variations in temperature.
