Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer (ILAS) II was successfully launched on board ADEOS-II on December 14 in 2003, and
started its continuous measurement on April 2. It measures aerosol extinction coefficients at eight window channels in the
infrared. Only 780 nm extinction data were used in this study. Latitudinal coverage of ILAS-II is almost the same as that of
POAM III. Sometimes coincident data can be obtained with SAGE III. ILAS-II level 2 data of aerosol extinction at 780 nm were
compared with data observed with POAM III (780 nm) and SAGE III (755 nm) near ILAS-II measurement locations. In general, they
showed good correspondence to each other, which validated ILAS-II 780 nm extinction data. In the Antarctic winter of 2003,
ILAS-II started to observe PSCs around May 20. From June through September, collocated temperatures were often below 190 K,
and many PSCs events were detected in ILAS-II data. Highest PSC sighting probability reached as much as 95 %. Some profiles
were truncated at higher altitude levels because of their opacity, implying the existence of type II PSCs. Sometimes ILAS-II
and POAM III observed PSCs at locations close to each other, which enabled to discuss the horizontal extent of the clouds.
