TI: SAGE III Measurements of Tropospheric Ozone: Preliminary Results

AB: Tropospheric ozone is an important greenhouse gas; however, its global distribution and behavior is not well understood. Many satellite systems lack adequate vertical resolution or a significant signal-to-noise ratio to provide meaningful information on ozone in this region. Satellite experiments using the solar occultation technique, on the other hand, offer sufficient vertical resolution (~1 km) and enhanced signal levels that permit a detailed view of the upper troposphere. The major shortcoming of this type of measurement set is its rather limited spatial coverage and the presence of clouds. This paper will report on the distribution of ozone in the upper troposphere observed by the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE III) satellite instrument, which was launched in December 2001. This instrument includes a number of advancements from its predecessor, SAGE II, such as a 16-bit digitizer and increased spectral range and resolution. These features provide added signal strength in the troposphere and offer better filtering of aerosol and cloud structures in the field of view. The presentation will focus on comparisons between SAGE III, other satellite experiments (e.g., SAGE II and POAM III), and balloon-borne sensors. The presentation will also show the distribution of ozone in the upper troposphere revealed from approximately 18 months of observations.
