AB: Brookhaven National Laboratory conducted a series of aircraft flights with the DOE G-1 aircraft during the Summer 2002 New England Air Quality Study (NEAQS). The principal objective of these flights was to conduct a regional survey of aerosol/oxidant precursors, aerosol mass loading, composition, and microphysics. Seven flights were made from July 8 - July 24 and on various days extended from central NY to the North Atlantic Ocean east of Boston. On two of the flights over the North Atlantic, measurements were made in conjunction with the NOAA research vessel the Ron Brown. To date, analysis of the aircraft data shows that- 1. Significant long-range transport of aerosol and trace gases from mid-western source regions to the Northeast and out over the North Atlantic can occur under certain commonly observed meteorological conditions. 2. Aerosol composition is a strong function of aerosol loading with sulfate dominating aerosol composition under high loading conditions and organics under conditions when the loadings were low; nitrate did not contribute significantly to aerosol composition under either circumstance. 3. Transport of pollutants from North American out over the ocean is vertically structured suggesting that much of this transport occurs well above the surface. In part, this phenomenon is caused by the presence of a strong temperature inversion that forms near the ocean surface.
