During the summer of 2002 several NOAA Research laboratories (Environmental Technology Laboratory, Aeronomy Laboratory,
Forecast Systems Laboratory) collaborated with the National Weather Service, including the National Centers for Environmental
Prediction (NECP), on a project to assess and improve forecasts in New England using a regional testbed approach. During
this project arrays of special research grade instruments were deployed throughout New England by NOAA Research, including
seven 915 MHz wind profilers with RASS, cloud ceilometers, and surface meteorology stations that included solar and net
radiation. Measurements from these instruments were compared against predictions made by operational and research forecast
models, including the Eta, RUC, WRF and MM5 models. Model/observation comparisons were made on an hourly basis in real-time
during the experiment. Results from this project will be presented, focusing on phenomena that most directly affect pollutant
transport and mixing, including boundary layer depth, sea-breeze representation, and mesoscale transport.
