AB: A three-dimensional chemical transport model driven by assimilated winds is used to isolate the effects of the Antarctic ozone hole (AOH) on southern hemisphere midlatitudes. The model incorporates chemistry using parameterized production and loss rates as obtained from a two-dimensional photochemical model. Simulations with and without polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) chemistry, one of the processes responsible for the AOH, are performed for the years 1997-2000. Specific low ozone events in the midlatitudes are analyzed to determine the contribution of PSC chemistry. The effect of Antarctic ozone depletion on midlatitude ozone trends is also examined along with a discussion of the role of interannual variability.
