Coupling sea ice models within global atmosphere-ocean models adds several computational and scientific hurdles to the grand
challenge of global climate and weather simulation. Producing a truly realistic simulation of polar climate, sea ice cover,
thickness and ice drift is still elusive in global models. Problems inherent in the atmosphere, ice, and ocean models all
contribute to problems in the sea ice simulations. Numerical stability of ice, atmosphere and ocean models near the poles
create limitations in the usable model timestep and grid resolution, so alternate global grids have been implemented in many
models. The evolution of coupled ice models from simple slabs to the present dynamic-thermodynamic models with
elastic-visco-plastic rheologies, and the future of high-resolution modeling of discrete ice floe interactions will be
presented.
