During the past decade, the study of red sprites has evolved from the
observation of general
physical properties and application of relatively simple
models to detailed research into the
fundamental nature of the morphology,
chemistry, and energetics of this highly dynamic
phenomenon. Spectroscopy is
one area that has provided significant information on the
energetics and
chemistry of sprites. This includes observations from video spectrographs and
narrow band imaging and photometry. This talk will review spectroscopic and
photometric
observations and present recent results on ionization and electron
energetics observed in sprites.
