The rapid urbanization in southeastern US has greatly reduced the extent of forested land and thereby lead to a release of
carbon to the atmosphere. On the other hand, recovering vegetation from abandoned agricultural land and forest plantation
can take up a significant portion of that released. Climate variability and land management have added additional
uncertainty of the role of southern forests in carbon sources and sinks of the nation. In this study, we have used a newly
developed terrestrial ecosystem model (TEM) to integrating multi-scale data sets from remote sensing and field observations
in the forested landscapes, located in west Georgia. Our analyses show changes in carbon storage in both vegetation and
soils in the past decades. Also we quantify the relative contribution of land use, climate and management to net carbon
exchange between the atmosphere and the forested landscapes.
