This research investigates the relationships among socioeconomic character, land cover, and ecological function in a rapidly
urbanizing region, the Front Range of Colorado. We use novel spatial geographic information systems- (GIS-) based data
integration and data mining techniques to integrate and analyze diverse spatial data sets. These data include elevation
data, transportation data, land cover data derived from aerial photography, block group-level U.S. Census data, and
vegetation greenness (NDVI) data derived from Landsat imagery. These data are used to derive a variety of U.S. block
group-level variables indicating demographic, geographic, ecological, and land cover characteristics. We employ spatial
association rule mining, decision tree induction, and spatial on-line analytical processing (OLAP), in addition to more
conventional multivariate statistical techniques, to investigate relationships among these variables.
