The conversion of natural ecosystems to agriculture has been the dominant mode of land conversion over the last three
centuries. To understand the ecosystem consequences of global agriculture, we need global data sets of the spatial extent of
agricultural land cover, as well as the management practices occurring on those landscapes. We are developing contemporary
and historical datasets of global agricultural land use and land cover using a combination of remotely-sensed land cover data
sets and agricultural land use census data. In particular, we are mapping the extent of croplands and pastures, the
distribution of major crop types, the yield and production of various crops around the world, the fertilizer application
rates, etc. The methodology as well as maps of several of these data sets will be presented.
