Because plant physiology controls simultaneously the exchanges in carbon, energy and water between land surface and
atmosphere, numerous climate variables are modified when changes in photosynthesis occur. Numerous models simulations or
observations studies have already shown that a change in vegetation can strongly impact climate variables such as DTR
(Diurnal Temperature Range) or Bowen ratio. We suggest that these atmospheric signals register not only vegetation's strong
influence on climate, but they also constitute powerful proxies from which changes in photosynthesis activity could be
quantified. We propose: (1) to identify the physical variables that can be used as "markers" of summertime photosynthesis
variability using two long, pre-industrial simulations performed with the CCSM NCAR coupled global climate-carbon model; (2)
to test the conditions under which the markers can be used; (3) to add a new dimension to this analysis in exploring
ground-based and/or satellite measurements.
