Through an automated synoptic classification system, the authors investigate the trends and variability of significant
accumulation and ablation events in the Canadian Rockies. Using a statistical analogue approach validated from field data
collected for the past 3 mass balance seasons at the Haig Glacier, Kananaskis Country, Alberta, frequency of occurrence is
examined for synoptic types which dominate the accumulation and melt regimes of a continental glacier. Annual and decadal
variability in accumulation and ablation events are described and future applications are outlined.
