AB: Nearly 50 years ago, the International Geophysical Year (IGY) heralded in a new era of scientific discovery, and many of the early-career researchers involved in the IGY became scientific leaders in the ensuing decades. The next International Polar Year (IPY) in 2007 could be one of the largest scientific endeavors ever conceived for the polar regions, and to have a lasting effect, today's early-career researchers need to be involved in the planning and the science of the next IPY. Given the multidisciplinary nature of many pressing polar science issues, mechanisms must be created to bring together diverse early-career researchers to discuss IPY planning efforts, potential collaborations, and help train the future Polar science leaders. This poster discusses various programs aimed at bringing together early-career researchers to assist in planning the next IPY, and suggests how the creation of a new IPY-specific conference for early-career researchers could create a lasting impression for the IPY.
