Graduate students and recent doctorates at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science and K-12 teachers in
Pinellas County, Florida come together in a new GK-12 OCEANS initiative to bring science to life in the classroom. In our
particular partnership, we are working with four fifth grade classes and a combined fourth and fifth grade class at Frontier
Elementary School in Clearwater, Florida. Our students have made weekly weather measurements, making their own
instrumentation, building a data set, evaluating time series, and coming to understand the changing nature of climate and
weather over the course of the school year. Additionally, they have conducted a number of shorter-term projects, engaging in
hands-on, minds-on scientific research into many different aspects of the ocean environment, individually and in groups.
