The Earth rotation and orientation are observed with very high precision techniques.
Scientists are using the accumulation of recent data in order to get information
about the Earth rotation variations: length-of-day (LOD), polar motion
and nutations. The core has a large influence on the LOD at decadal timescale,
and in the nutations. In particular the analysis of the Earth orientation in
space from Very Long Baseline Interferometry, has provided the scientific community
with information about the coupling between the inner core and the outer core and
between the liquid core and the mantle at the nutation timescale. It also provides
the values of the rotational normal mode periods and amplitudes. The paper will review
the situation.
