AB: Locating a DNAPL source is very difficult because of its filamentous nature and small size. This paper addresses the issue of identifying and delineating DNAPL at its source, using an optimal search strategy. A search algorithm that utilizes on-site groundwater concentration data is used to define an area where the concentration of one or more soluble DNAPL species exceeds that concentration deemed indicative of DNAPL in close proximity. The search algorithm is used to define how to achieve an acceptable level of accuracy with the least possible number of water quality samples. This computer-based strategy uses groundwater flow and transport modeling under uncertainty and a linear Kalman filter. The hydraulic conductivity realizations are generated using the Latin Hypercube Sampling technique. This search algorithm provides information about both the source location and the contaminant plume simultaneously and in real time.
