AB: The Soil Moisture Experiments in 2002 (SMEX02) were conducted in Iowa from June 25th through July 12th. A major aim of the experiments was extension of existing algorithms for soil moisture retrieval from active and passive microwave remote sensing parameters to more challenging vegetation conditions. This paper examines the performance of the Passive and Active L and S band sensor (PALS) by comparing stimulated brightness temperatures and backscattering coefficients with the instrument observations. Sensitivity of the PALS instrument to soil moisture in both active and passive channels has been analyzed under varying conditions of soil moisture and vegetation cover. A change detection algorithm that combines observations in the active and passive channels to arrive at soil moisture estimates has also been employed to investigate the performance of the PALS active channel. Comparative studies of the L and S bands have been done to illustrate the greater sensitivity of the instrument at lower frequency.
