TI: Are there any relationships between the dry frame moduli and hydraulic properties of unconsolidated sediments?

AB: The petrophysical properties of unconsolidated sediments that affect their hydraulic properties also affect the dry frame bulk and shear moduli. These include the porosity, clay content and particle size distribution. We investigate the potential relations between these dependent and independent variables using data from laboratory measurements. The measurements were performed at varying confining pressures ranging from 5-40 MPa. Unconsolidated samples were characterized and their physical properties which include porosities, clay contents and particle size distributions were estimated. The relationships between these petrophysical variables and the dry frame were assessed to understand how they influence the dry frame moduli. Regression models were then developed to predict the dry frame moduli using these petrophysical properties and the applied effective pressure as the prediction variables. The prediction model is compared with existing models such as the Krief's Model. Such predictive models would serve as a useful tool in aquifer and reservoir characterization studies as well as time lapse seismic modeling.
