Transient water movement within the vadose zone has profound effects on the response of unconfined aquifers to pumping. Much
has been published regarding the interpretation of unconfined pumping tests. However, there remains a debate regarding the
relative contribution of delayed drainage to the observed aquifer response. Some of the source of this ongoing debate is the
lack of sufficiently convincing data to quantify the magnitude and extent of delayed drainage. We used borehole ground
penetrating radar to provide exceptionally high spatial and temporal monitoring of soil water dynamics in the vadose zone
during pumping. Results show the precise evolution of water content profiles. These profiles confirm the presence of
significant delayed drainage. However, the resulting profiles are not well predicted by current numerical flow models. Does
this point to another, poorly described mechanism that may control the response of unconfined aquifers?
