TI: Determination of specific storage of porous rocks from flow pump experiments: theoretical analysis and experimental evaluation

AB: Flow pump permeability experiments are one of the methods used to obtain both hydraulic conductivity and specific storage of rock samples. However, transient pore pressure changes during the experiments are affected by the storage capacity of the flow pump apparatus. In this study, we used two approaches to deal with this problem. One is a theoretical analysis using the concept of sensitivity and the other is a comparison of experimentally obtained specific storages from flow pump experiments and poroelastic measurements, to evaluate the effects of the storage capacity of the apparatus to calculate the specific storage of the samples. Both results show that it is necessary to reduce the ratio of the storage capacity of the flow pump apparatus to that of the sample as small as possible (less than 0.3 from theoretical analysis and less than 0.7 from experimental results) to accurately obtain the specific storage of the sample. Thus, to determine the best estimate of sample storage, we need to take into account the effect of the storage capacity of the apparatus. This allows proper design of the experimental apparatus for measuring the specific storage of rock.
