AB: We are trying to develope a method to remove nitrate from soil percolate where high-concentration nitrate infiltrates into groundwater, for example, a site of land application olf wastewater. We construct a soil layer whose thickness is ranging from 1 cm to several inches and whose saturated hydraulic conductivity is approximately equal to the representative infiltration rate of the site. We call this a "Low permeability layer" because the permeability of this layer is usually much smaller than that of the original site. When water containing nitrate percolate into the soil, the low permeability layer becomes saturated and thus hinders the oxygen transport from the surface to the region below the low permeability layer. In a series of laboratory experiments, we found that this method can work, and that the obsereved nitrogen removal rate was much lower than that usually can be expected in fully anaerobic systems. In this report, we summarize the results of 2 years experiments and discuss the feasibility, limitation, and perspective of this method.
