AB: There are two aerosol products in the Terra/CERES-MODIS Single Satellite Footprint (SSF) data. The first is the standard MODIS aerosol product (over ocean and vegetated land) mapped to CERES footprints. The second is derived over ocean using the two-channel NOAA/NESDIS AVHRR-type aerosol retrieval algorithm with CERES/MODIS clear-sky radiance as input. These two aerosol products will be compared in the paper to help building up the connection and consistency between the advanced MODIS aerosol data and the long-term historical AVHRR aerosol data. They will also be validated against the ground-based AERONET observations. Error sources associated with cloud contamination, surface variability, and aerosol model assumptions in the two products will be evaluated.
