AB: A sea surface temperature (SST) retrieval, using a narrow region about 1305 cm$^{-1}$ (7.6 microns), has been developed for the Baltimore Bomem Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (BBAERI) as a part of the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) BBAERI Ocean Validation Experiment (ABOVE) at the Chesapeake Light platform. The BBAERI retrievals and in situ measurements of SST by floating or moored buoys afford a source of validation for global satellite measurements, and in turn, enable a better understanding of global climate change and atmosphere/ocean coupling. Global climate models require sea surface temperatures accurate to within 0.3 K. Difficulty arises when comparing point measurements (buoys) to 2 m single spot measurements (BBAERI) to larger spatial scale observations (1 km MODIS and 13.5 km AIRS). To enable a similar mapping of SSTs around Chesapeake Light, satellite measurements over 20 km are averaged in 1 km range rings and bracketed by the maxima/minima of BBAERI measurements within 1 hour of overpass. Comparison of BBAERI/AIRS on Aqua, and BBAERI/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) on Aqua and Terra retrieved SSTs agree to within 0.15 K for clear sky cases during Summer/Fall 2002 and Summer 2003.
