AB: The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the key instrument of the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS), and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), a high-resolution infrared sounder closely coupled with the AMSU-A (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A) and HSB (Humidity Sounder for Brazil), were launched aboard the Aqua satellite on May 4, 2002 (1:30 pm equator crossing time, ascending). The suite of Aqua instruments, together with those on the Terra satellite (launched on December 18, 1999), enable the global monitoring of the atmosphere, the terrestrial ecosystems, and the oceans, and will provide long-term data sets for the same geophysical parameters needed for climate and global change studies. MODIS has a 2330 km viewing swath width and provides data in 36 spectral bands between 0.415 and 14.235 micron, with spatial resolutions of 250 m (2 bands), 500 m (5 bands), and 1000 m (29 bands). Improving upon heritage sensors, MODIS provides better sensitivity, finer spatial resolution, and new channels, yielding unprecedented volume of information on Earth's atmosphere and surface. The 2378-channels AIRS, on the other hand, together with AMSU-A and HSB, constitute an innovative atmospheric sounding group of visible, infrared, and microwave sensors that measures temperature at an accuracy of 1$\deg$ K in layers 1 km thick, and humidity with an accuracy of 20% in layers 2 km thick in the troposphere. Thus, while the scope of MODIS is the details of the Land and Ocean surfaces and the total atmospheric column, AIRS mission is to better understand the vertical atmospheric structure. The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Distributed Active Archive Center (GES DAAC), seen as "GSFC-ECS" in the Earth Observing System Data Gateway,currently distributes three major groups of MODIS data: Level 1 Radiometric and Geolocation, and all levels of Atmosphere and Ocean data. The MODIS Atmosphere data types are Aerosols, Water Vapor, Clouds, Profiles, and Cloud Mask. The MODIS Ocean data types include Normalized Water Leaving Radiances, Ocean Color, Sea Surface Temperatures, and Ocean Primary Productivity (OPP). The AIRS/AMSU-A/HSB products include Level 1B radiances and, and planned to be released soon, retrieved Level 2 atmospheric parameters and profiles such as temperatures, humidity, cloud, water vapor, and ozone. The MODIS and AIRS Data Support Teams were established at the GES DAAC to provide end-to-end support to users in navigating through the complex structure of MODIS and AIRS information. In spite of instrument specifics, MODIS and AIRS offer similar products in number of cases. Our goals are: to understand the similarities and differences between comparable geophysical products from the two instruments and guide Users through it; to explore the potential benefits of combined use of MODIS and AIRS data, as well as cross-instrument validation and ancillary data substitution.
