AB: Global ocean surface wind speeds are a valuable geophysical product obtained from observations made by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) on the Aqua spacecraft. Remote Sensing Systems also produces ocean wind speeds for SSM/I and TMI using the same physically based model. The sun asynchronous coverage of the TRMM TMI is used to obtain close collocations with AMSR-E winds. Preliminary reports of 3-month comparisons showed rms statistics of 0.5 m/s. This good agreement of AMSR-E with other radiometers is confirmed in more comprehensive radiometer and scatterometer intercomparisons reported here. In addition to these instrument validations, we report on AMSR-E wind speed validations using open-ocean NDBC, PIRATA, TAO and Canadian moored buoy data. Overall statistics and specific examples are used to demonstrate the quality of the AMSR-E winds.
