Since June 2002, the Upper Air Instrumentation and Research Programs (UAIRP) group located at NASA Wallops Flight Facility,
Wallops Island, Virginia has been conducting regular correlative measurements for Aqua/Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS)
validation. Balloon-born instrumentation includes: electrochemical concentration cells (ECC) to determine ozone
distribution, chilled mirror hygrometers to measure relative humidity, accurate temperature measurement radiosonde (ATM) for
temperature measurements and accompanying standard radiosonde data. Each of these methods yields results with roughly ten
meter vertical resolution. These measurements have been obtained approximately weekly at Wallops Island, Virginia, Natal,
Brazil, and Ascension Island. Additional measurements have been taken during limited campaigns at Andoya, Norway and Andros
Island, the Bahamas. The validation data is compared to AIRS retrieved measurements of ozone, humidity, and temperature.
Differences in the data sets are examined for spatial, temporal, and seasonal dependencies.
