The hydrologic cycle in the semi-arid regions of Africa is highly variable. Sustainable water resource management requires
the assessment of the hydrological impacts of climate variability and land use changes. As part of a larger study we are
using two numerical models the Integrated BIosphere Simulator (IBIS) and the Hydrological Routing Algorithm (HYDRA), to
investigate the relative impacts of the three major determinants of the observed changes in terrestrial hydrology in Africa:
(1) climate variability, (2) land use, land cover change, and (3) water management practices. Based on both historical
climate fluctuations and hypothetical scenarios, this study focused on addressing how climate variation and land use changes
affect the hydrologic regime in Lake Chad Basin and Niger River Basin, including (a) hydrologic sensitivity and vulnerability
to climate fluctuations; (b) hydrologic response to a variety of scenarios of temperature increases and precipitation
increases or decreases; and (c) hydrologic impacts of different vegetation types and land use scenarios. Possible future
hydrological regimes and consequences of the existing climate variability and land use practices were also discussed.
