AB: In this study, we investigate the soil hydraulic parameter upscaling in terms of the optimal averaging schemes for steady state flows with rootwater uptakes in heterogeneous soils. The effective soil hydraulic parameters of the heterogeneous soil formation are calculated by conceptualizing the soil formation as an equivalent homogeneous medium that will discharge the same ensemble-mean surface flux. The derived optimal effective powers for the hydraulic parameters define an optimal averaging scheme for the soil hydraulic parameter fields. One of the major findings of this study is that although the plant rootwater uptakes influence the overall water budget, their impact on the effective hydraulic parameter averaging schemes is secondary.
