Concern in central Alaska over the impact of erosion and sedimentation in the Delta-Clearwater River watershed has prompted
the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to evaluate sources and sinks of sediment
within the watershed. In the spring of 2003, NRCS completed a sensitivity analysis on the Granite/Rhoads Creek subwatershed
by evaluating existing data with FLO-2D, a two-dimensional flood routing model with a sediment transport component. A grid
network covering an area of approximately 5,350 acres and containing 23,310 grid elements was overlain on a portion of the
Granite/Rhoads Creek subwatershed in the area of interest. Four model scenarios were evaluated to represent a range of best
and worst case watershed conditions. Two-dimensional plots of "net change in elevation" and "maximum velocity" by grid
element were developed from each of the simulations and provide information on the geographic distribution of erosion and
sedimentation within the modeled area. Processing of the model output has provided information on the relative severity of
erosion in terms of sediment yield and rates of erosion.
